I’m

I’m an artist and art & business coach.

I help artists master their business and transform their mindset so they can share their gifts with the world - and make money doing it.

Nice to meet you!

Here’s what I’m all about!

You may have found me through Instagram,

where I share my beach walks and art.

or you might have been referred here by an artist friend -
that’s how this works,

artists love to talk about art -

and money - with other artists.

On this site - we talk about both.

Because we need both.

We need to make art that creates meaning in our own lives

and also connects on a deep level for those who buy our work.

And,

artists need to make a living,

and you deserve to thrive!

Now for a teeny bit of my story …

I didn’t start calling myself an “artist,” or even really making art on a regular basis, until I turned 50. Seriously.

Before that, (like, my whole life) I would take a class here, a class there, in fits and starts. But even though I was obsessed with oil painting - reading about artists, looking at art, visiting museums, all that - I truly thought I was BAD at drawing and painting - and no matter what - I’d always be bad at it.

(my first self-portrait)

Yes, this was me at age 7.
Notice the backup plan of veterinarian - I corrected my own spelling. Writer it was!

Sound familiar?

So I went another creative route - writing.

I got a lot of praise for my writing, and it came more easily. (No wonder - I’m a 3 (the Achiever) on the Enneagram, and very driven by a sometimes destructive pattern of what others praise in me, (but more about that later!)

I ended up getting an MFA in poetry, and then a PhD - a lot of years, and I wouldn’t change a thing!

I published a book of poems, then became a wine and food writer, and published two more books.

But still, something was missing - so finally, when I turned 50, I saved my pennies (literally), and went back to an amazing art program at Gage Academy in Seattle. I finished the Studio Arts Intensive, and a year in the fabulous Kimberly Trowbridge Atelier in Georgetown, Seattle.

Long story short, I finally realized I was not BAD at painting, but I just had to accept myself and move forward from there. Duh.

And so I did.

As I started to sell my art and develop a serious creative practice, I realized something that kind of changed everything for me:

SO many artists out there

are going through the exact same things I am

  • anxiety about how to feel confident about creating
what I REALLY want to create - will anyone like it?

  • how to develop an ongoing creative practice
that is fulfilling, sustainable and successful?

  • how does this thing work?

  • how to set up systems that make life easier?

  • how to get over anxiety around marketing and selling work

  • how to get over myself, stop spinning my wheels and get it DONE?

So I kept going - reading books, learning from mentors,
coaching fellow artists
in marketing, writing, and website stuff -

(my friends tease me because I love spreadsheets & systems -
and yes, I’m the one that makes spreadsheets for Friendsgiving.

At first they laughed, but every year they say - we need a spreadsheet!)

And I wanted to do more -

to really dive into the creative process,

to go deep into why and how we create, and how our growth

and self-awareness as artists is not only a business venture,

but a spiritual path

that can truly make the world a better place.

where i’m at

I live in the San Juan Islands in Washington State,

an endless source of inspiration

(and lots of driftwood, seaweed, and little stones)

The upshot of where I’m at now:

You can sell your art without selling out.

And so-called success is about much more than selling!

If you can set up systems that help:

  • your money flow more easily,

  • your message become more YOU,

  • and your email list grow organically,

    it makes EVERYthing easier.

So, eventually, I found an amazing community of artists
here in the San Juan Islands -
focused on learning and sharing their art with the world.

I was drawn to teaching what I was learning from my artist friends, mentors, and business coaches (that PhD didn’t hurt).

And I found my artist friends appreciated my help -
so in the past two years, I have envisioned and developed
a business that helps other artists create sustainable businesses.

I found that when artists understand their own creative process better, they have more tools to develop a business that is

authentic, life-affirming, and amazing!
